We are all well aware being sedentary is bad for our health. Moving muscles pump fresh blood and oxygen through the brain and trigger the release of all sorts of brain- and mood-enhancing chemicals. When we are sedentary for a long time, everything slows, including brain function.
One way to counteract the negatives associated with sitting for long periods of time is to add movement and actions to your work day. I have attached photos and explanations for stretches that can be done at your desk. Be gentle with your stretches, if 1 equals the beginning of the range of movement and 10 is the max stretch, causing pain. Then stay between a 4-5, while holding the stretch for 20-40 seconds. When an area is very tight and restricted, you can hold the stretch over a minute. But do not bounce in and out of the stretch, just hold to a comfortable level and wait for the muscle to relax. The focus should be to correct the posture. Make sure to sit up tall during the stretches, while supporting the low back through bringing the belly button towards the spine.
Stretching at your desk is just one of the many ways to improve your overall health and wellness. Here are another five ways to get your body moving without having to go to a gym.
Every hour, take five to ten minutes to walk around the office, to get your blood moving. When you return to your desk you will feel better and be more productive.
Take the stairs whenever possible. These active moments add up, and something is always better than nothing.
Sit on something wobbly, like an exercise ball, or a backless stool, to engage the core muscles. Sit up straight and keep your feet on the floor in front of you.
Work on your balance. While brushing your teeth or standing and talking on the phone, try to stand on one foot. This will help to engage the core.
Drink a lot of water. Research suggests that drinking water can aid in weight loss efforts. Plus, the more trips to the bathroom, the more calories you will burn and the more you get to stretch your legs!
I really found this helpful! Thank you
